The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve if you're playing as a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also famously open-ended, letting players to experiment both in story and combat. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
